Who Am I?

I am 13 years old, and recently heard about the humanitarian refugee crisis in Europe. Hundreds and thousands of people are fleeing war torn lands of Syria and Iraq.  Upon hearing and seeing pictures about the crisis, I felt a lot of sadness and wanted to do something to help. 

I live in the U.S. and live a comfortable life, without any worries. Meanwhile, these people are starving, and are without any shelter except for the tents that the Belgian government has provided for them. Winter is already setting in that part of the world. Your contribution would be an extreme help, for these people to get them started on a few basic items like food, diapers.   They will no longer have to worry as much and hopefully can get started on the life they fled for. 

What Do We Need?

I have an aunt who lives in Belgium and she has been helping the refugees firsthand and bringing them what they so direly need. 

100% of the money collected will be used by her towards providing basic necessities such as toiletries, diapers and baby food. 

What is the Impact of Your Contribution?

These refugees fled for a better life. Unfortunately, in Europe they don't have the basic needs to accomplish that self goal. It would be an incredible help to these people if you can donate.

Help a Syrian family start a new life in Toronto.

The Goal

We are witnessing a refugee crisis that is Europe's biggest since World War II. Almost 4 million people have fled Syria since the start of the conflict, most of them women and children. It is one of the largest refugee exoduses in history. But this is not just Europe's responsibility. 

Anyone who has the ability to help is responsible and cannot remain apathetic. 

These are people with lives and families and careers who are facing a choice that none of us can imagine. Putting their children on boats, acting out of desperation, all with the goal of getting somewhere safe. Anywhere safe. Their country has been ravaged by a war that has been going on so long that many Syrian children don't know any different. Poverty, fear, starvation and violence is all that they have ever known.

If you are like me, you are reading about families suffocating on trucks, and drowned toddlers washing up on beaches and you're feeling heartbroken and helpless. 

I, like so many others that I know, want to do something. But it is expensive to get a family relocated here to Toronto, and on their feet. 

The minimum cost to help relocate a family of 4 through Lifeline Syria* is $27,000. 

When I saw that number I was disheartened. I don't know anyone who has that much money to donate in a lump sum. But I can contribute some money and I know a lot of others who are willing to do the same. If we come together collectively, we can make it happen. We can change a family's entire life and path, as well as the path of their children. 

What We Need & What You Get

Lifeline Syria recommends that groups come together to sponsor a family. Partly because, finances aside, the family will need other kinds of support. Time is a big one. The family will need orientation and emotional support, they will need assistance with finding employment, navigating transportation systems, making health connections and registering for school.

This crowd-funding site is one small way to contribute to us reaching this goal and helping a family directly by getting them here to Toronto. This campaign will run alongside fundraising events to help us further reach our goal.

The Impact

It goes without saying that the direct impact to improve valuable lives is immeasurable. And it will be the result of a grassroots movement, which is a beautiful thing. 

Risks & Challenges

I will be completely transparent about the fact that I'm scared to take this on. This is a huge target. It will take a lot people and time and contributions to reach this goal. But I'm an optimist and I refuse to be daunted by the number. This is not an impossible goal.

All of that said, if we can't achieve the target number, all of the funds raised will be donated to Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) International, or Doctors Without Borders which is a known NGO, making progress at helping people on the ground.
